Fruit flies can quickly become a very annoying problem in a home! If you buy fresh
fruit or vegetables and keep some on countertops, you may wake up the next day to
a fruit fly problem. They can be very tough to kill and they seem to spread quickly.
Fortunately there is a very simple homemade trap which we have tested with great
success. You can find similar versions of this on the internet. But here is the
simple version of the trap:
Take a small glass container or cup and fill it about 1/3 of the way with apple cider
vinegar. You only need maybe an inch tall of vinegar in the cup. Gently mix in a
few squirts dish soap, about a teaspoon, so there are no bubbles. Then, leave it
on your counter overnight near where the source of the fruit flies. In the morning
you will see a good amount of flies dead on the bottom of the jar. You can dump
this and continue it each day until you are rid of the fruit flies.
There are some methods online that include covering the cup with plastic wrap and
cutting a whole in the middle. This method does not seem to be as effective (and
is not as simple) as just keeping the cup open.
The apple cider vinegar attracts the flies while the soap changes the composition
of the vinegar and pulls them in where they are unable to get out and they drown.
This is a very simple and inexpensive tip that has been tested over and over to effective.
Don’t use expensive and harmful pesticides for these annoying bugs. Apple cider
vinegar, a little dish soap and you are all set!
